Most riders think changing fork oil is just about pouring the correct amount… but that’s where things usually go wrong.
👉 Oil quantity is only a starting point. What really defines how your suspension works is:
- Oil height (air chamber effect)
- Oil viscosity (real cSt, not “5W” marketing)
- Spring rate + preload
- Compression & rebound settings
If you don’t understand how these interact, you can easily make your bike:
- Unstable under braking
- Harsh on bumps
- Slow on corner entry

Why Oil Level Matters More Than Quantity
Fork oil level controls the air chamber inside your fork. That air works like a secondary spring.
👉 Small changes in oil height can dramatically affect:
- Bottoming resistance

Hi, Thank you for all these valuable informations! really educated me alot i initially thought suspension oil is the same as engine oil for the SAE… turns out is alot more complicated. I have couples questions, i ride a 2020 r1 and the fork oil recommend in the service manual is YAMALUBE 01, i think it’s just a rebrand of the KYB 01? and YAMALUBE M1 is the same as KYB 01M?
And also i found Maxima racing fork oil(5w) has nearly identical cSt as the YAMALUBE 01, and also much higher viscosity index, (also cost much less lol..) does this mean maxima is a superior direct replacement in this case? However it seems YAMALUBE is synthetic and Maxima is mineral/petroluem based, does the different in oil type matters?

The viscosity index (VI) is one of the most important specifications of a suspension oil, yet it’s often one of the least understood.
In simple terms:
The viscosity index indicates how much an oil’s viscosity changes as temperature changes.
High VI = viscosity changes very little with temperature.
Low VI = viscosity changes significantly with temperature.
For example:
Oil A → VI 350
Oil B → VI 150
If both oils have the same viscosity at 40°C, the oil with a VI of 350 will maintain a more consistent viscosity as the fork or shock heats up.
This is important because suspension oil temperatures can easily rise from 20°C to 50°C or more during normal riding.
What About Mineral vs Synthetic Oil?
These are two different things.
The base oil type (mineral or synthetic) is one factor.
The viscosity index is a performance characteristic of the finished product.
That’s why you can find:
A mineral oil with a VI of 300.
A synthetic oil with a VI of 180.
And vice versa.
Generally speaking, synthetic oils tend to achieve higher viscosity indexes more naturally and maintain those properties more consistently over time.
A Practical Example
Imagine:
Mineral Oil
Viscosity: 16 cSt at 40°C
VI: 320
Synthetic Oil
Viscosity: 16 cSt at 40°C
VI: 180
On paper, the mineral oil has the better VI.
This means:
It will maintain its viscosity more effectively as temperature increases.
Suspension performance will change less during use.
However, that does not automatically make it the better oil.
What the VI Doesn’t Tell You
The viscosity index says nothing about:
Shear stability
Additive durability
Oxidation resistance
Foaming tendency
Lubricity
Long-term aging characteristics
This is where synthetic oils often have an advantage.
A high-quality synthetic oil may retain its overall performance for much longer, even if its VI is somewhat lower.
So, for road use choose the synthetic: it will last longer.
For racing applications: choose the higher viscosity index to keep perfomance as stable as possible during laps. But remember to replace it 2-3 times per year.
