Recommended SAG for Enduro Bikes: The Best Starting Point
If you ride an Enduro bike, you have probably heard that you should run more SAG than on a typical Trail bike.
But how much is enough?
And should you simply follow the same percentage recommended by another rider?
The short answer is: SAG is a starting point, not a magic number.
For most Enduro bikes, a good starting point is around:

These values provide a useful baseline for developing an Enduro suspension setup. From there, your terrain, riding style, suspension design and personal preferences may justify small adjustments.
Why does Enduro use different SAG?
Enduro bikes are designed around a very different compromise from lightweight XC or Trail bikes.

They need to climb reasonably well, but their main advantage appears when the terrain becomes steep, rough and technical.
During aggressive descending, the suspension needs to maintain traction while dealing with:
- Large impacts
- Repeated bumps
- Steep braking zones
- Technical terrain
- Rapid changes in load
- High-speed direction changes
This is why Enduro setups generally prioritize traction, stability and control over maximum pedalling efficiency.
The rear suspension, in particular, benefits from enough SAG to keep the rear wheel following the terrain rather than skipping across it.
Recommended Enduro SAG: 20% Front / 30% Rear
A useful starting point is approximately 20% SAG at the fork and 30% at the rear shock.
The slightly higher rear SAG helps the rear wheel remain connected to the ground and provides a good balance between traction and support.
At the front, a lower SAG percentage provides additional support under braking and helps maintain front-end stability when the terrain gets steep.
But don’t treat these numbers as a rule that must never be changed.
They are simply a good place to start.
How much SAG is 20% or 30%?
SAG is a percentage of the available suspension travel.
For example, if your fork has 160 mm of travel:
20% SAG = 32 mm
And if your rear suspension has 150 mm of travel:
30% SAG = 45 mm
The important point is to calculate the percentage from the actual available travel rather than simply copying a measurement from another bike.
Your suspension travel may be different, even if the bikes look similar.

How to Measure Enduro SAG Correctly
Before making any adjustments, measure your SAG correctly.
Wear the equipment you normally use when riding. Helmet, shoes, hydration pack and protective equipment all contribute to your actual riding weight.
Then:
- Move the O-ring against the fork seal or shock body.
- Get on the bike in your normal riding position.
- Keep your feet on the pedals and avoid heavily loading the saddle.
- Let the suspension settle naturally.
- Carefully step off without moving the O-ring.
- Measure how far the suspension has compressed.
- Calculate the percentage of travel used.

Don’t Just Chase the Number
This is one of the most important points when setting up an Enduro bike.
You can have exactly 20% fork SAG and 30% rear SAG and still have a suspension setup that doesn’t work properly.
Why?
Because SAG only establishes the starting position of the suspension.
It doesn’t tell you:
- Whether the spring rate is correct
- Whether rebound damping is appropriate
- Whether compression damping is limiting suspension movement
- Whether the suspension is balanced front to rear
- Whether the bike is using its travel effectively
- Whether the setup matches your riding style
If the bike feels harsh, unstable or lacks traction, changing SAG may help — but it isn’t always the real solution.
What if My Enduro Bike Feels Too Harsh?
If the suspension feels harsh and the bike isn’t maintaining traction over rough terrain, you may be running too little SAG or have another setup issue.
Increasing SAG slightly can make the suspension more compliant and improve traction.
However, don’t simply keep adding SAG until the bike feels comfortable.

Too much SAG reduces support and can make the bike feel vague, sluggish or easier to bottom out.
Make small changes and evaluate the bike again.
What if My Enduro Bike Feels Too Soft or Unstable?
The opposite situation can also occur.
If the bike feels vague, dives excessively under braking or lacks support when pushing hard into corners, reducing SAG slightly may improve the balance.
Again, make small changes rather than making large adjustments at once.
Suspension tuning works best when you can clearly identify what changed and what effect it had.
Front and Rear SAG Should Work Together
One of the most common mistakes is concentrating entirely on the fork or rear shock.
Your bike is a complete system.
Changing rear SAG can influence:
- Weight distribution
- Front-end grip
- Steering behaviour
- Pedalling position
- Cornering balance
Likewise, changing fork SAG affects how the bike behaves under braking and how much weight is carried by the front wheel.
The goal isn’t to achieve two independent numbers.
The goal is to create a balanced suspension system.
Enduro SAG: A Starting Point, Not a Final Setting
For most riders, starting around 20% front SAG and 30% rear SAG is a sensible baseline for an Enduro bike.
From there, evaluate how the bike actually behaves.
If you need more grip and compliance, you may prefer slightly more SAG.
If you need more support and stability, slightly less may work better.
There is no single SAG percentage that can account for every rider, bike, terrain and riding style.
The important thing is to understand what the number is doing — and why you’re changing it.
